Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI)
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from your weight and height that provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people. It is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
How BMI is Calculated
BMI is calculated the same way for both adults and children. The calculation is based on either:
- Metric units: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ (height (m))²
- Imperial units: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) ÷ (height (in))²
BMI Categories
The standard weight status categories associated with BMI ranges for adults are:
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9
- Obesity: BMI 30 or greater
Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has some limitations:
- It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others with a muscular build
- It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass
- It doesn’t account for factors like age, sex, ethnicity, or muscle mass
For a more comprehensive health assessment, consult with a healthcare provider who can evaluate additional factors like diet, physical activity, family history, and other health screenings.
